At the appliance, the vapor hits a coil (coiled copper or stainless steel tubing), which condenses the steam and transfers its heat to be utilized within the appliance. The condensation usually returns towards the boiler through another set of pipes, known as the return piping, to be reheated and created into vapor once again. 3. Calculate how long the pipe will be. This includes not only the actual length but also the equivalent length that you should permit for pipe fittings, elbow joints, valves, and so on. Figure out this length in hundreds of feet. This is called the effective length from the pipe.

4. Divide the allowable strain drop by the effective length of the pipe; then divide that number by 100. This will give you the acceptable pressure drop per 100 feet of pipe.

5. Refer towards the correct chart in Table 6-3 to figure out if the pipe size you've is adequate for the job.
