I have often wondered what the benefit of manual transmission in a car is. If you don't need to do all that gear shifting and use three pedals on the floor, then why do it? I set out to find why cars were still made with manual transmissions and if there was a benefit other than making it more difficult for anyone to borrow or steal your car.

Cars with manual transmissions get better fuel economy than the automatic transmission cars. The difference in gas mileage has actually decreased with the newer automatics that have locking torque converters. However the gas mileage between a properly operated manual and automatic transmission can range from 5% to 15% based on the style of driving and driving conditions. Manuals do not require active cooking and also weigh less than automatic transmissions. A manual couples the engine to the transmission with a rigid clutch instead of a torque converter the automatic transmission uses. A torque converter slips by nature. Manuals also lack the power consumption of the automatic transmission's hydraulic pump.

The manual offers a higher selection of gear ratios. Many cars offer a 5 or 6 speed manual where the automatic option would be a 4 speed up to a 8 speed. The higher selection of gears allows for more uses of the engine's power band which allows for higher gas mileage and power output. This is due to the extra space inside of a manual transmission since the automatic requires components for self shifting.

Manual transmissions are more efficient because the driver has more direct control over the car. With a manual the driver can control how much torque goes to the tires which is useful when on slippery surfaces such as ice, snow or mud. This can be done with the clutch or starting in second gear instead of first. A manual can often be started by push if the starter is not working.

Only fully manual transmissions allow the driver to fully exploit engine power at low to medium engine speeds. This is because even automatic transmissions that provide some manual mode use a throttle kickdown switch. This is very notable on uphill roads where automatic transmission cars need to slow down to avoid downshifts but manual transmissions are still able to maintain their speed.

Manual cars also lead to less use of the brakes. Automatic transmissions have a free wheel clutch which means the engine does not slow down the car when the driver steps off the throttle which leads to more usage of the brakes.
