Do You Need a Professional to Install Kitchen Cabinets?

If you are having your cabinets custom made then installation will be handled by the company doing the work but if you are buying stock cabinets from a home improvement store there is no reason you can't put them in yourself. While hanging the cabinets might be a little challenging, it can be done with a little bit of assistance. You probably won't want to try tackling hanging the cabinets on the wall by yourself but if you have someone help you hold them up while you are fastening them to the wall it isn't too tough.

The most important part of installing new cabinets is to make sure that you are fastening them to the studs that are inside the wall. Cabinets which are not properly secured can come loose and cause major damage. If you removed the old cabinets, you should have a good idea of where the studs in your kitchen are located. You can check for sure by tapping a nail into the wall until you feel it grab into the stud, mark that location and then mark every 16 inches in both directions. Studs are installed in new construction every 16 inches on center. You can also use a stud finder to locate the studs in your kitchen.

After you have marked where you are going to fasten the cabinets to the wall, it is time to mark where each of the individual cabinets will be placed. The bottom of the cabinet should be placed 54 inches off the ground so measure up from the floor where your cabinets will start and make a mark. Now go to where the top cabinets will end and make another mark. With a level draw a straight line between the two and nail to the wall along that line a board that you will use as a guide for installation of the wall cabinets. You can rest each cabinet on this ledger board as you fasten them to the wall. You can also get special cabinet jacks that you can place under the wall cabinet to hold it in place while you work.

The cabinet should be screwed into the wall with two screws on top and bottom. Each of the screws should go about an inch deep into the stud in the wall. You do not want to make the screws as tight as possible at first because you need to leave a little wiggle room to line up each wall cabinet with the next in the row. Screw the cabinets into each other before you go back and tighten them into the wall. Most stock cabinets come with little pilot holes in the side of the frame for attaching the cabinets together. While you are working on making sure that the cabinets meet together properly use a clamp to hold them together. Your base cabinets should be installed in the same fashion. Begin by making sure they are level and then secure them with screws into the wall behind the cabinet and screw them into each other.
